Playoff Predictions [Part 1]

Western Conference:

Sharks [1] vs [8] Avalanche

If I asked at the end of last season, who would have thought that come April, the Avalanche would be playing their 83rd game of the season? Pretty much no one. But believe it or not, they are. The young, fast Avalanche team has surprised everyone this season, and have proved they can compete with the best. 2-2-0 versus the Sharks this year, they’ve proven they can beat the top seeded team in the West. And we all know how well the Sharks do come April… But maybe this is San Jose’s year to turn things around: Marleau is having a career year, the addition of Heatley has made them a very scary team to play because they can light the lamp, and they have tons of depth… They could easily win the Cup. Colorado has 15 players who have never played a post-season game, and this isn’t the same Sharks team as in the past. However, being an Avalanche fan, I say not to discard them from contention. They are a surprising team who ran out of gas near the end of the year; the playoffs could bring a boost to their game. Craig Anderson got nearly a week off and is ready to go. And like he has been all year, he could be the difference maker for Colorado.

My Prediciton: Avalanche in 6.

Blackhawks [2] vs [7] Predators

Nashville is 2-4-0 against Chicago this year, and I have a feeling their playoff series will be on the same page. While the Blackhawks won’t have the greatest goaltending, they make up for it easily in the amount of skill they have on both offence and defence. Nashville is outmatched, and it would take nothing short of a miracle to derail the Hawks.

My Prediction: Blackhawks in 5.

Canucks [3] vs [6] Kings

3-1-0 against the Kings this season, Vancouver gains the upper hand in this series. Henrik Sedin is coming off of an Art Ross winning season, and obviously Daniel Sedin is just as skilled, and Roberto Luongo is undoubtedly one of the best goalies in the NHL. Los Angeles is another young team, and if last year’s playoffs are any indication of what the Canucks can do to a young team (St. Louis Blues, 4-0 sweep), I don’t think the Kings can pull off a win. However, it will be a hard fought series, and should be interesting to watch.

My Prediction: Canucks in 6.

Coyotes [4] vs [5] Red Wings

And perhaps a bigger surprise than the Colorado Avalanche, enter the Phoenix Coyotes. A team doomed at the start of the year by bankruptcy, they managed to turn things around nicely (a little too nicely for an NHL-owned team if you ask me…). They have an amazing goaltender, some nice scoring up front from a couple of deadline acquisitions, and some experience on the backend. One of the more balanced teams in the Playoffs, they have what it takes to go on a serious run. However, they face one gigantic obstacle: the red-hot Red Wings. While the teams split their season series, the Red Wings are one of the better teams in the NHL. Starting a better portion of the season off on the wrong foot, Detroit turned things around 180 degrees when their stars got healthy. They finished off the season with 102 points, and could have easily won the Conference (and the President’s Trophy) under the right circumstances. No matter which way it goes, this is going to be one hell of a series to watch.

My Predicition: Red Wings in 7.

Holy fuck that looks delicious.

Some sites I use…

I’m bored and I feel like making a list of what websites I have an account on. If you use any of these sites, add me on them too. :P

Sites for everyone:

  • Facebook: I mean, who doesn’t use Facebook? I’ll give you a hint, not me.
  • Tumblr: … I wrote this on here. I mean, you’re looking at my Tumblr account if you’re reading this, but I’ll throw it on here for the hell of it. Blogs let me do things like this.
  • Last.fm: Keeping track of how much music I listen to, and my top artists, etc. is awesome. Everyone listens to music, so why the hell don’t you all use this? There’s plug-ins for ALL media players, so no excuse there. It works on Mac, it even works on Linux. USE IT.
  • YouTube: Everyone watches YouTube videos. EVERYONE. Having an account lets you favorite and rate videos, not to mention upload your own shitty videos (kind of like mine).

Sites for gamers:

  • Xfire: Okay, it’s not really a site I recommend… it’s the shittiest program that doesn’t work half the time (missing over 400 TF2 hours because of that). But hey, tracking the amount of time you waste playing games is fun in a way. I just never bother getting rid of it, and I started using it over 3 years ago, so meh.
  • The Backloggery: A cool site to keep track of your entire video game collection (and for me to show myself how much money I waste and how few games I ever finish…). The only thing is the amount of time it takes to add games to the list… I’m nowhere near done mine… ¬¬
  • Steam Community: If you play games via Steam, you have one of these. You’re not a real gamer without one. Oh yeah, TF2 is coming to Mac.
  • 360voice.com: If you have a 360 and like keeping track of things like your biggest achievement gain, current play streak, and whatnot (as well as taking part in automatic gamerscore challenges), then you need to use this site.

Found this on the internet:

In the original Pokémon Red/Blue, when you encounter your rival in Lavender Town he asks whether or not you know what it’s like to have one of your Pokémon die. At this point in the game, he no longer has his Raticate that he used in previous battles.

Your rival battle before this took place aboard the S.S. Anne. Your rival’s Raticate sustained serious injuries from the battle…but, because crowding and confusion on the luxury liner, he was unable to make it to a Pokémon Center in time and the Raticate passed away. And so, it’s set…

… The rematch of the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City. This Sunday, Canada and the USA will face off in the gold-medal game, this time on Canada’s home soil. The ultimate revenge for the USA would not only be to win the game, but to win it in Canada; especially after they failed to win gold at home against the Canadian squad 8 years ago. On the other hand, the Canadians would like to get revenge for the first meeting between the Canada and the US earlier in these year’s Games; and winning a gold-medal in the process is a great way to get revenge.

It might not be the Canada-Russia final I wanted, but it’s living up to the hype. The USA is the only unbeaten team in the tournament, and Ryan Miller is playing outstanding. Canada seems to be struggling compared to how they should be doing with the amount of skill in the lineup. All of a sudden, it’s anyone’s game. If it was a rematch of 8 years ago with the same rosters, I’d say Canada would win regardless of the circumstances. I kind of have a really bad feeling that the USA will steal it this time around. To be fair, the USA roster isn’t as skilled as they were 2 Olympics ago, so Canada does have a chance. They need to find something to fire them up, be it the crowd, the pressure, the gold-medal, the chance to win in their home country, anything. Either way, it’s going to be one hell of a hockey game.
